Save Money for Travel? Cancel your Cable TV!
Since we're planning a longish excursion next year we've been cutting back a lot on what we're spending, and especially watching the impulse purchases. One thing that was contributing to our impulse buy's was television. You may not realize it, but with so many product placements, jingles, ads, etc you remember much more than your mind realizes. And soon driving down the street is "oh yeah, I wanted to try that new burger from such and such, or I wanted to rent that new movie". There's no better way to save money for travel than by canceling cable television services.
We had a "basic" package from our cable company (Rogers Cable) and it was costing us nearly 90$/month after taxes. That's $1080 dollars a year folks. Since we rarely watch tv, and are trying to save money for travel we decided to cancel it about two months ago. So far we haven't missed it much and we've definitely seen a reduction in our spending habits.
We're also doing more around the house, planning for the trip more, etc since canceling cable, however I still do miss the channel surfing sometimes - maybe we'll look into Free To Air (FTA) Satellite systems since they seem to be a 200$ or so total one time investment. Or, about 2 months worth of cable.
Essentially, with one 15 minute phone call we've saved up $1080 dollars towards travel. Money much better spent in our opinion.
